A Coat of Arms represents authority on display.  It is worn or displayed by public officials to symbolize and validate their authority.

Penn family Coat of Arms

The original Coat of Arms of Province of Pennsylvania was the Coat of Arms for the Penn family. At that time, the colonies were set up as corporations of the Kingdom of Great Britain. William Penn was the proprietor of Pennsylvania so his personal Coat of Arms was used to demonstrate the source of authority for the province.

Representations of the Penn family Coat of Arms are shown here.

The original Coat of Arms was used until it was replaced by the current one in 1778. The current Coat of Arms is shown here.
