A Pennsylvania Constable is an elected official with a six year term limit. A Constable is defined by State Law as a Police Officer, Law Enforcement Officer, and a Peace Officer.

The scope of authority is “keeping the peace”. This is an antiquated term that means “enforcing the law”. The scope of Constable police authority is plenary in nature across the Commonwealth.

PA. In Re Act 147 (1990):

“Simply stated, a constable is a peace officer. A constable is a known officer charged with the
conservation of the peace, and whose business it is to arrest those who have violated it… It is the
constable’s job to enforce the law and carry it out, just as the same is the job of district attorneys,
sheriffs, and the police generally.”

PA Constables are known colloquially as G6 because many use the iconic gold, six-point star badge.
